I only plant #20 size or smaller container-grown or bare-root trees. It’s natural to want to plant the biggest possible tree, but the bigger the diameter of the tree, the more time the tree takes to adapt to the site, and the more time it will take to establish and start growing. By the time the “larger” diameter tree is established, the “smaller” tree will have already reached the size of the large one, and with much less trouble.
