Why we don’t top trees

Topping a tree refers to cutting the entire top of the tree off at a certain height. It’s been known to be an unsafe and unhealthy practice for decades. Here’s why:

U of M Extension

The University of Minnesota extension has a wealth of information about pruning small trees and shrubs, choosing the right tree for a site, soil conditions, gardening, and so much more. Other nearby state extensions, such as Wisconsin and Iowa, are also amazing resources.

Emerald Ash Borer

This invasive insect has killed ash trees all over the Midwest and the Twin Cities. Treatment is necessary for survival of ashes in southeastern Minnesota and all of Wisconsin.

Structure pruning

Most people think a tree doesn’t need pruning until it is grown up, which couldn’t be further from the truth. Pruning is viewed as a way to keep branches away from homes and removing deadwood, but properly executed, pruning over the entire life of a tree, especially in the first ten years after planting, will result in a healthier tree with a structure less prone to failure in adulthood.
